High-Level Segment of the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly

Burundi participated from December 8 to 12, 2025, in Nairobi, Kenya, in the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly, the highest-level global decision-making body on environmental matters.

UNEA-7 adopted a new medium-term strategy for UNEP (2026-2029), which prioritizes activities to address the interdependent crises of climate change, erosion, biodiversity and pollution, and to promote the circular economy and the efficient use of resources.

Eleven resolutions, three decisions and a ministerial declaration reaffirming the commitment of Member States to the circular economy, covering the entire life cycle, and to the fight against environmental crime, among other things, were adopted.

The High-Level Segment of the said Assembly took place on December 11, 2025, and Burundi was represented by His Excellency Prosper Bazombanza, Vice President of the Republic of Burundi.
In his speech, HE Prosper Bazombanza stated that the 7th UNEA is a unique opportunity for the international community to renew its political commitment to addressing the triple global crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. He then called for strengthened partnerships, equitable access to climate finance, and increased support for developing countries.
