On October 9, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of the Republic of Kenya presented a Certificate of Recognition to Her Excellency Evelyne Habonimana, Ambassador of the Republic of Burundi to Kenya. This was in recognition of the role played by the Embassy’s response team during the influx of Burundian nationals to the Embassy from September 7 to 12, 2026, following the Kenyan government’s announcement prohibiting foreigners from engaging in small-scale trade without proper business registration.
In her speech, Her Excellency Evelyne HABONIMANA expressed her deep gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora for the rapid deployment of security resources, the implementation of crisis management protocols and the immediate coordination which played a decisive role in stabilizing the situation.
At the same time, she also thanked the organizations that mobilized without hesitation, including St John Ambulance, the Kenya Red Cross, the Chandaria Foundation, IOM and UNHCR.
