1. Today, we have gathered to celebrate the 62nd anniversary of Burundi Independence Day that we got on 1st July 1962. This day holds great significance as we honor the sacrifices of our forefathers who fought for our freedom. Freedom was not easy to get as many brave freedom fighters had died. We stand here, enjoying the fruits of their struggle. This day is also an occasion to remember the hero of our Independence Prince Louis Rwagasore who fought for the dignity of the country.

2. May the Almighty God who led them to victory receive our praises and worship and may he lead us to complete the work done by our predecessors by taking appropriate actions as well as consolidating this Independence.

3. Independence Day is an occasion to reconnect with our history but also an occasion to assess our present and reflect about our way forward. In this regard, this year, the 62nd anniversary of Burundi Independence Day is celebrated under the theme “Economic Independence, the basis of national sovereignty”.

4. To achieve this, the Government of Burundi is implementing the development vision in order to improve the quality of life of Burundians by 2040 and to achieve developed nation status by 2060. This vision focuses on social, economic and the general development of the population. Some of the pillars of this 2040-2060 vision include, the improvement of the institutional capacities of the State , developing agriculture that creates wealth and as a catalyst for food security, increase of production and access to energy, improvement of logistics infrastructure and accessibility to all zones, cleaning up and stabilizing the macro-economic framework, developing the industrial sector and its competitiveness, developing the financial services sector and new information and communication technologies (NICT), strengthening the services sector, improving access to basic health care for all and develop competitive higher education in science and technology in order to contribute to the development of Burundi.
